MOTIVATION - 3 Keys to Lasting Change.



David Bowie once sang, “Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes, tryin’ to face the strain.”

There are times in life when trying to change can be a strain. If you are like most folks, you have tried to change something in your life. And, like most folks, may have found yourself frustrated when you were unable to change. Perhaps it was a habit, an attitude, or some part of an important relationship. Whatever the issue, try as you might, you were not able to get the changes you wanted.

Welcome to the club, it’s a big one.
Here’s the really good news - you can get the changes you want! And it doesn’t have to take years and years and cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, two of the more common myths about the process of change.
Here’s a question - have you ever tried to open a ketchup bottle with a lizard? Of course not. The reason behind that rather odd question is to illustrate how frustrating and silly it is to try to do a job without the proper tools. My job in this column, and as a counselor, is simply to give you some of the tools that I have found useful in helping people get the changes they want in their lives.
Today we will look at three key tools for getting the changes you want, whether it’s at work or home.
Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want
What do the following statements have in common; “I want to stop smoking”, “I want to stop yelling at my kids”, “I’ve gotta stop working so hard”, “I need to stop neglecting my marriage.” One thing they have in common is they are all statements from clients, in the first session, when I ask them what they would like to be different about their lives. Another thing these statements have in common is that they all focus on what they don’t want.
Why is that important?
Well, think about it for a moment. When you first learned how to throw a ball, were you taught where to throw it to or where to not throw it? Another silly question, really. Of course you were taught to focus on where you wanted the ball to go.
In the same way, to achieve the changes you want, focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. It’s really not that difficult. In the examples above, all we need is a change in wording, which brings a change in focus.
Here’s a sample of what I mean -
“I want to stop smoking” becomes “I want to be smoke free.”
“I want to stop yelling at my kids” becomes “I want to manage my kids (and myself) better.”
“I’ve gotta stop working so hard” becomes “I want to work smarter, not harder, and enjoy life more.”
“I need to stop neglecting my marriage”
becomes “I need to make my marriage a priority.”
And so on.

Focus on one change at a time

Trying to change too many things at once dooms you to frustration at best, and failure at worst. You can end up like the side show at the circus. You know the one, where the guy is spinning several plates on a stick, and has to run around to keep them all spinning at once. Eventually, you wear out, quit, and all the plates come tumbling down.

When working on changes, especially at first, focus on one area of change at a time. As you get your “psychological feet” under you in one area, move on the next, and then the next, etc. In this way, if you worked on one change a week for a year, that’s 50 things you could change in a year, with two weeks off for vacation.
Aim for progress, not perfection.
Let’s say you want to quit smok- oops, I mean become smoke free, for instance. You make it for six days, and then smoke one cigarette. It’s important to remember that six days smoke free is progress. Go for six more and then build from there.
What you don’t want to do is focus on the slip-up, and then give up in frustration. So many times we expect perfection from ourselves when we want to change. That’s a sure set-up for failure.

Focus on the progress, even if it’s one step up and two steps back. Keep going, and eventually you can get to 100 steps up and an occasional step back.

Focus on what you want, one change at a time, aim for progress. That’s a three part prescription for successful change.

Stabilize Your Current Situation Before You Invest






Before you consider investing in any type of market, you should really take a long hard look at your current situation. Investing in the future is a good thing, but clearing up bad – or potentially bad – situations in the present is more important.





Pull your credit report. You should do this once each year. It is important to know what is on your report, and to clear up any negative items on your credit report as soon as possible. If you’ve set aside $25,000 to invest, but you have $25,000 worth of bad credit, you are better off cleaning up the credit first!





Next, look at what you are paying out each month, and get rid of expenses that are not necessary. For instance, high interest credit cards are not necessary. Pay them off and get rid of them. If you have high interest outstanding loans, pay them off as well.





If nothing else, exchange the high interest credit card for one with lower interest and refinance high interest loans with loans that are lower interest. You may have to use some of your investment funds to take care of these matters, but in the long run, you will see that this is the wisest course of action.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO IMPROVE YOUR SELF IMAGE?


Sometimes, when all our doubts, fears and uncertainties surround us, we always start with the idea that "I wish that I were someone else".


More often than not, we think and believe that someone, or rather, most people are better than us. When in reality, the fact is that the majority of people are more modest than us.

I have a friend who never tires of talking. And most of the talks, she is the only thing that seems to be interested in the things she has to say. As all our friends tend to avoid circles when she is around, and she doesn't notice how badly she became socially disabled - gradually affecting the people in her environment.



A key to self-help is to listen and speak with a friend confidence. Approach someone you find comfort in opening with even more minor issues to discuss. Ask questions such as "do you think I'm ill-mannered?", "Do I always sound so argumentative?", "Do I want to talk too high?", "Does my breath smell?", "Have I ever board you when you were together?".  In this way, the person who obviously knows that you are interested in self-help will give you ear to your comments and criticisms and not their answers "do not exaggerate! In other countries people die for the right to vote. Our country may die someday because so many don't care to vote.


There are many books written on how to deal with difficult people. But do we ever pause to consider the shocking possibility that we might be someone's "difficult person"?


Let me see if I have this right: The father of one hockey player beats to death the father of another hockey player because a kid's game was getting too violent? The scary thing is that kind of thinking is not as rare as we might like to believe.


Thousands of years from now, when they dig up our civilization, they will wonder about this culture that seemed to worship boxes. Sound strange? I'm talking about the big box that you find the family-room furniture arranged around, and the little boxes found in several other rooms: the TV set.


Watching other people living is not living.


Many people misread a very important part of the Declaration of Independence. We don't have the right to happiness, we have the right to the pursuit of happiness. Kind of goes against the notion that we are entitled by just showing up.


The best way to make a problem worse is to attempt to solve it with the same kind of thinking that created the problem.


You can accomplish much more than you can't.


If you don't want your children to say it, do it or think it, you had better not say it, do it or think it.


Two of the most useless words are "if only." Two cures for the "if onlys" are to do the necessary things today that eliminate the possibility of "if only" tomorrow. It's also important to remember that what might have been is not necessarily what would have been.


Best way to communicate poorly -- focus on making yourself understood first. Best way to communicate well -- focus on understanding the other person first.


Life has its moments of unexpected blessings out of unexpected problems. Our curious little son bent down to pick up a small cactus in the parking-lot median. As I placed him in the car seat, with him wailing and me wondering how to get the thorns out, and how to explain it to my wife, up walks his pediatrician, who expertly removes the thorns.


Our children can be wonderfully humbling mirrors. After a prolonged temper tantrum resulted in our son missing out on a fun event, I actually heard this coming out of my mouth: "When you decide to stay angry you can miss out on a lot of good stuff."

Don’t Just Hope - Decide!

As the story goes, a single college-age guy went to the airport one day to pick up a friend. As he waited for his friend to come off the plane, he noticed a man hurrying through the crowd, calling to the woman and two children standing next to him. The woman and two children were calling to the man as well. The man rushed up to the woman, took her in his arms, looked into her eyes, said "It's been too long!" and gave her a big kiss. As he bent down to hug each of his children he said "I've missed your faces so much."
As this touching scene was happening right in front of him, the young man couldn't help but watch the moment. The older man caught his gaze, and in an embarrassed tone, the young man said, "I'm sorry for staring, it's just such a beautiful scene. You must have been gone a long time."

"Yes, I was," he answered, "two whole days!"

The young man responded with "Wow, I sure hope I have a family like that someday."

To which the older man replied, "Don't just hope, decide."

Don't just hope, decide.
Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with hope. It's a good thing. Losing hope is a bad thing. Hope deferred makes the heart sick.

It's just that too many of us only hope things will change, get better, etc., and then that is all we do. Faith may move mountains, but you had better bring a shovel. We hope, but we don't do anything, we don't decide.
Just hoping and not deciding to take the necessary actions leads to excuses. Excuses such as the worn out words, "Well , I tried." Once you decide, however, there are only two possible outcomes. You either get what you were aiming at or you create good reasons (excuses) why you did not succeed.

Instead of hoping you can get in better shape this year, decide to get in better shape this year.

Don't just hope you will become a better parent or spouse this year, decide you will become a better parent or spouse this year.

You could hope to save some money this year, or could decide to save some money this year.

Don't just hope ... well, you get the point.

Once you have decided, then it's time to make a specific plan for how you are going to get there. Making a plan does not have to be a complex and burdensome task. Making a plan can be as simple as saying, "I'm here, I want to be there." Then comes step one, step two, step three, step four and so on.

I know that may sound overly simplistic to you. I guess I could complicate it with lots of squishy psychobabble, but why?

You might not know what the steps are, and that's fine. If you don't know what the steps are, don't use that as an excuse.

Find out. Read a book on the subject. Find someone who has done or is doing what you want to do and find out how they did it. Hire a counselor or coach to guide and motivate you.

Once you get started, watch out for three of the deadliest words that can derail you in a hurry. These three deadly words are "Just this once ..." Just this once I'll not go to the gym, watch television instead of listening to my spouse or child, spend the money set aside for saving, etc.

The problem with "just this once" is it rarely stays just this once. Just this once becomes just one more time, a new pattern is set, and pretty soon you forget all about what you were wanting to do.

Hearing yourself say "just this once" needs to become a big red flag of warning to you. So the next time you are tempted to give in to just this once, turn these words on their head. Tell yourself that "just this once" I'll stay consistent and keep going with the plan.

Remember how simple it can be. I'm here, I want to be there. One, two, three four.
